Summary:
The Grey Wagtail is the largest of the wagtail species of the British Isles. It has a grey head and back and yellow underparts. A black horizontal stripe is present on either side of the eye. The male has a black bib under the bill. Like all wagtails it bobs its tail up and down giving the impression of imminent flight. The Yellow Wagtail is similar in size but has an olive green back.
Ecology:
Grey Wagtails are seldom found far from streams and brooks. They move from lowlands areas in winter to higher ground in summer, feeding mainly on aquatic insects and molluscs.
Habitat:
Near flowing water.
Distribution:
Throughout the British Isles. Less so in the east during summer.
